T-shirt Hack: Robot Hoodie

The instructions on how to make this super cute robot hoodie from a few t-shirts and some felt are posted on Intructables.  One of the best parts is that the robot head doubles as a pocket for your ipod.

Check out some of my other favorite Instructables here.

Cool Contest Alert: T-shirt Hacks

Those crazy kids at Instructables are at it again with a great contest - T-shirt Hacks Transform your t-shirt into something cool and share the steps.  Enter your t-shirt hack and you could win a prize.  We are big fans of using t-shirts for all sorts of purposes (see some past blog posts here).

The requirements are pretty simple: modify a t-shirt in a creative way to give it a new look. You can use more than one shirt or add anything you like, but the result should still be wearable. Put the instructions and pictures in an Instructable in the T-Shirt Hacks speed challenge in the next couple weeks and you’re good to go!

You can submit your entires until April 6th, voting goes until April 10, 2007. So far there are only 32 entries - so there is a good chance of winning.  Which one is your favorite?

Really Fitted

We have all sorts of shirts that are available to add your design too. I know that finding the right fit is a big topic of concern, especially when it comes to women’s t-shirts. You can check out all of the many options on the Spreadshirt Product Assortment page.

If you find yourself with a great t-shirt, that is just too big, then this tutorial is for you. The good folks at ThreadBanger have put together a quick video tutorial on how to add some darts to your t-shirt to get a close fit.

T-shirt to Purse Tutorial

It has been awhile since we have posted an idea for transforming a t-shirt into something now.  Click here to see some of the other ideas for creating new things out of old t-shirts.  If you are new to the Spreadshirt blog, make sure to check out the post about turning your t-shirt into a swimsuit.

I caught a glimpse of this tutorial on this nifty show “Thats Clever” on HGTV.  The happy host spends some time on how to transfer a design to the t-shirt.  I think it would make more sense to use a shirt from Spreadshirt for this project - definitely much easier than the transfer method they talk about on the show.  Plus I think using sparkle flex or flock would make an awesome bag.   I have been looking for a place to test out my sewing skills.  Or if you are looking for a custom bag - check out our cinch sack.  I took mine on a hike yesterday.  An easy way to create a custom bag.

More things to make with your t-shirts

Tree Hugger has an article about more things to make out of your t-shirts. They link to some ideas we have already featured here on the blog but they also have some new ideas. I like the t-shirt made into a skirt.

Fitted T-shirt Tutorial

I found this on the the Blog.  Check out this nice and easy tutorial for turning any t-shirt into a fitted t-shirt.  This tutorial uses a Make t-shirt for the demonstration.  I saw some t-shirts like this at Urban Outfitters a few years ago.  Now you can make your own, ultra hip fitted t-shirt.

Clothing that sends Mixed Messages

Check out this t-shirt/hoodie combo from the site Evil Mad Scientist.

This is an awesome shirt design idea that is just text. Mmmm - maybe we will have to try one of these for the Open Shop Project. The folks at Evil Mad Scientist want to see your ideas for shirt/hoodie combos - post your pictures to the Evil Mad Scientist Flickr Group (and share them in the Spreadshirt Flickr group too!)

I really like the comment that one person left at Evil Mad Scientist:

now zippers reveal spliced grafitti
good god lenore
youve invented [drumroll please]
zip-itti?

T-shirt Underwear

Since I posted about how to make your t-shirt into a swimsuit, I thought I would let you all know about these instructions for turning your favorite t-shirt in to a pair of boy-cut underwear. From the Craft Blog here is a link to the tutorial on Flickr.

T-shirts & Activism

This article on CNN.com talks about MomsRising.org, which is an online community founded by Joan Blades (she is one of the founders of MoveOn.org) that focuses on bringing attention to work-life balance issues in the United Sates. I was really excited to see this story on CNN because I have been working with the MomsRising.org group here in PA since the summer. But I am even more excited that it offers the perfect example of how t-shirts allow online communities to expand beyond the internet.

In addition, members can take up their own tactics. Yvonne and Ken Zick, a member couple in Washington state, have resolved to wear Moms Rising T-shirts 365 days of the year in 2007 as part of their campaign for a paid family-leave bill being considered in their state.

T-shirts are a great way to take a web-based community and expand beyond the internet.  By wearing their Mom’s Rising T-shirts, Yvonne and Ken are taking the MomsRising message everywhere they go.

Do you have any examples of using t-shirts that helped to take an internet community offline?
