Early this week there was a great post on the Craft blog about how to make a t-shirt memory scarf. I think this is a great twist on the ever popular t-shirt quilt - but almost better because you can wear a scarf and you can’t really wear a blanket. We have been talking here at Spreadshirt about other t-shirt remixes - ways to resuse your t-shirts so I thought I would do a little round up of some other T-shirt Scarf ideas. continue reading ‘T-shirts Scarf Ideas from Around The Internet’
Today is Blog Action Day, a world-wide annual event where blogs focus on one specific issue to increase discussion about it within the community. This year’s Blog Action Day (with more than 8,000 participants) focuses on climate change, an issue which will affect us all, if it hasn’t started affecting us already.
Every product which is produced has an effect on the environment. T-shirts, and especially the cotton they are made from, are undeniably one of the many, many products contributing to climate change. This can be seen in the short video “Rebel with a Cause”, which I posted back in September. 200 grams of cotton can use up to 5 tons of resources throughout its life. That’s not what you normally think about every day when you put on your shirt. These resources are what we need to start considering when we consume just about anything.
1. Buy Organic Cotton T-Shirts
Our organic apparel assortment has grown to more than 10% of our entire product range. Buying organic means that less resources and chemicals are used in the production of the cotton. Companies like Continental with their EarthPositive products take this even an extra step further providing “wholly ethical” textiles: 100% organic, fair trade, low carbon during production, environmentally friendly materials, low water footprint and low carbon footprint (reduced by 90%).
2. Recycle Shirts
Every product has a life cycle and shirts are no exception. Your favorite shirt will get a hole, the print can fade (but, not flex or flock!
) or you simply don’t wear the shirt anymore. You don’t have to throw it away. Create a shirt blanket, shirtain, shirt seat, frame it or one of these 50 other t-shirt recycling ideas. Donate the shirt. Use it as a rag. Just don’t throw it away – it’s not good for your karma and not good for the environment.
3. Use less chemicals / Wear shirts more than once continue reading ‘5 Ways T-Shirts Can Fight Climate Change: Blog Action Day 2009′
Yesterday Problogger posted a list of the 10 most popular blog posts for Q3 2009. So I thought it would be interesting to see what have been the top 10 blog posts for the past month here at Spreadshirt. Here are the top 10 most read posts on the blog for the past 30 days:
It is kind of cool to see that people are stopping by the blog to read about all kinds of different things. We have been reading lots of blogs and talking about how we can improve this blog to be more useful to you. What would you like to see more of here on the blog? What stories and announcements are helpful? What could you live with out?
Are there other company blogs that you think are great? Some of our favorites include Timbuk2 and Southwest Airlines. What company blogs do you like to read?
Last week I set up a March Madness pool over on IheartPGH.com - I was really excited to see over 30 people sign up and make their bracket picks and I had a great time watching basketball last weekend. So I thought we should bring the fun to the t-shirt community. I have used the website PoolTracker.com (I checked out some of the other pool websites - this one seems the easiest to set up) to set up the Shirt 16 Pool.
Joining is easy..
HURRY - you need to pick your teams before the games start on Thursday morning!

Today’s TeeCycle blog has a link to Defunkd Vintage T-shirt, which is an online shop that specializes in vintage t-shirts. They are serious about vintage t-shirts and have a seriously cool website and blog - I love that the search box in the blog says “Ye Olde Search Bar…”
Today, I am wearing one of my old favorite t-shirts today, light blue poly cotton t-shirt from Covered Bridge Pizza in North Kingsville, Oh - I “borrowed” this shirt from a friend years ago - I have never been to the Covered Bridge but I know that it is the pizza shop near Calvary Camp - where we spend a few summers and she worked as a counselor. (By the way the Calvary Camp website has a really nice photo of the week page, it is interesting to see the camp in the winter).
Anyhow, I am worried about my covered bridge t-shirt - getting a few stains and may be time for retirement. Fortunately - Defunkd has a great post on t-shirt stain removal - with some super serious suggestions for getting the stains out of your favorite shirts.
Of the list of 11 stain fighting weapons my favorite are

I also appreciate the suggestion of making peace with your stain…
If all the previous methods fail you, we highly suggest learning to cope with your stain. Try putting some effort into your relationship. Eventually you’ll find your stain is a great listener and you just might warm up to it.
If your favorite t-shirt is from Spreadshirt you can always come back to Spreadshirt.com and make a new one

It has been awhile since I have watched the Spreadshirt Hands-Per-Piece Video. I just rewatched the video and thought it was time for a repost. I know the video is over there in the sidebar (look on the right side of the screen) but I think it deserves to be a post. This quick 2 minute video, with snappy sound track (from Los Campesinos), gives you a shirts-eye-view of how a shirt is made at Spreadshirt.
Do you know of any other YouTube videos that features Spreadshirt shirts?
Rather than write about Friday the 13th t-shirts (are there any t-shirts about Friday the 13th?) I thought we could skip ahead a day and talk about t-shirts for February 14.
Hide Your Arms has a post on t-shirt for the day 14 Tees That You Should Wear on Valentine’s Day. My favorite from the list is the Heartris Tee, makes me miss playing Tetris on my gameboy. If Valentine’s Day isn’t for you - check out the Hide Your Arms post from last year “14 Tees That You Shouldn’t Wear on Valentines Day”.
Buy-Tees has a post about the lack of good Valentine’s Day t-shirts, but I have to say I kind of like this html t-shirt from ThinkGeek. Check out all of the user submitted pictures of this shirt here.

While this is not just for Valentine’s Day - The Heart Invaders t-shirt from Amorphia Apparel is perfect for the occasion. Check out some other heart designs from Amorphia Apparel here.
Another shirt that isn’t just for Valentine’s Day, but the pink heart makes it a good choice for Feb. 14 is this Have a Heart T-shirt from the Little City Design’s Etsy Shop. Aside from the fact that I think this is a really cool looking shirt - all of the proceeds from this shirt are going to a foundation to support the artist’s godmother’s children. Read the whole story here.

Some More Valentine’s Day Fun…
The Etsy blog has a post with some links to the history of Valentine’s Day.
One of the things I posted on the IheartPGH blog this morning is a glass flower making workshop. For $25 you and a loved one can make your very own glass flower at the Pittbsurgh Glass Center. If you aren’t near Pittsburgh check out this tutorial that I found on the Etsy Blog (also on the Craft Blog) - how to make roses out of ribbon. Now we just need some one to come up with a way to make flowers out of t-shirts!
Thanks to the Blog Herald for their post on Facebook’s fifth birthday. It seems like facebook has been around for many more than 5 years. Mashable includes a look at how the Facebook profile has changed over the past 5 years.
I thought I would use this happy occasion to remind you to be a fan of Spreadshirt on Facebook! Also, if you are shop partner and have a fan page/group for your shop please share the link here so we can be a fan of you too.
Here are some cool things that I checked out on the web today.
Super Vintage T-shirt at TeeCycle.org - Teecyle Tim has posted some pictures of a t-shirt that is 32 years old - it is a perfect vintage t-shirt worn into to perfection. While the shirt won’t be 32 years old - you can get the vintage look at Spreadshirt with the heathered t-shirts and the semi-sheer tee.
TshirtWin on Twitter - TCritic’s Karl Long is now on twitter - I am excited to see what he will be tweeting about.
Product Pictures Flickr Group - I recieved an invite to this group today and it is a neat idea - post pictures of products that you use. It will be cool to see what products people in other parts of the world post. Also a good place to share a picture of your favorite t-shirt.
What cool websites have you looked at today?
