CNN Headline Shirt of the Week: King of Pop’s hair will create diamonds

michael jackson's hair will create diamonds CNN headline t-shirt

This is one of the more interesting CNN Headline t-shirts I have seen. When I first saw the headline I was hoping it was going to be some sort of retrospective on Michael Jackson’s haircuts over the years. He had many different styles - and I have dound that most people have a strong opinion on which one they preferred.

But there really is a way to turn hair into diamonds - and I learned quite a lot of interesting facts from this video. I have to say I am a fan of Jeanie Moos - she does a good job of asking questions on these segments too.

The company, LifeGem, can create diamonds out of human hair. The hair that they will use to create this diamond came from the infamous Pepsi commercial shoot where Michael Jackson’s hair caught on fire. There is a guy, John Reznikoff, who is the world leading hair collector - check out this video from the Wall Street Journal about his hair collection - which is actually pretty interesting - especially if you are a history buff. Reznikoff recently teamed up with LifeGem to create a diamond from Beethoven’s hair.

Colorful Critters, Creatures and Celebrities – Zoo&Co Interview

At first glance Zoo&Co The Drawing Lounge might come across as a shirt shop for young’uns with its vibrantly colorful designs reminiscent of Saturday morning cartoons. Perhaps it was that very fact that made the shirts “grow” on me, and there is much more to discover and enjoy upon closer look. What really impressed me was their ability to create complex, colorful and detailed designs even with the “limitation” of 3 flex/flock colors. Shadows, outlines and contours in one color, fillers in another and a third for accents are puzzled together seamlessly. For a relatively young shop, they have a great selection of animals, celebrity caricatures and creatures – all well integrated into a skillfully designed site. Zoo&Co in Interview:

Whuffaoke - Karaoke Road Trip Across America while wearing the Spreadshirt Track Jackets!

Tara Hunt is the author of the book - The Whuffie Factor (I am reading it now and if you are interested in social media, social capital and how to use these tools - then this is the book for you). Tara is moving across the country in high style with a karaoke road trip - Whuffaoke or Bust! We have been following their trip because they have been sporting our gold embellished track jackets customized with Whuffaoke or Bust in gold metallic for their trip (check out their Spreadshirt shop here).

Tara and company brought their karaoke RV to Pittsburgh this weekend for a stop at the Pittsburgh Technology Council which was organized by another super Spreadshirt shop partner, Amie from EBSQ Art - who brought anlong some EBSQ shirts for karaoke participants.  This is a serious karaoke vehicle - you can see the speakers mounted on the roof and song requests are made via text message.  It was a really nice event - and I know everyone had a lot of fun - even the security guard from the tech council offices joined in for some karaoke.  They have a few more stops on the Whuffaoke road trip - some of the crew from the Spreadshirt office in Boston will be stopping by when they roll into town on Wednesday.

You can follow their trip at Twitter.com/whuffaoke

I know this photo is a little dark but you can see the karaoke monitor in the side of the RV.

Reddit - a Community Driven Collection of Links, and Shirts

It’s been just about a year since Spreadshirt got together with CNN to provide headline shirts, allowing users to immortalize their favorite quirky, amusing and intriguing headlines. Reddit, “a source for what’s new and popular on the web,” has also taken up on the immortalizing headline shirt idea for its user created headlines.

What is reddit exactly? Reddit is a community driven website which lists user-submitted links to be commented and voted on by other reddit users. The reddit pages are constantly in motion from the voting and it is a great place to browse through a collection of fresh and interesting links.

Where do t-shirts fit in at reddit? Reddit’s user generated headlines are quite often witty slogans or sayings based on current events, pop culture or one of their hundreds of sub-community topics. Reddit headline shirts allow you to take this online content offline. You can strut your own headlines or wear one that tickled your funny bone.

CNN Headline T-shirt: Gay Penquins Split

I caught the end of this segment about penguins on CNN last night and I was happy to see this headline t-shirt.

The 2 male penguins that have been a couple at the San Francisco zoo for the past year have split up.  Harry left Pepper for Linda after her husband died.  The Best Week Ever blog gives a pretty funny run down of the whole story here.  I have to agree with the blog Meidaite who filed this story under “great moments in journalism” - the reporting on the story is pretty funny.

But it makes you feel a little sad for Pepper the penguin - I wish I could get a pro Pepper the Penguin t-shirt.

I Shot the Serif - New Fonts at Spreadshirt

“I shot the Serif, but I did not shoot the deputy.” I haven’t been able to get this song out of my head for the last few weeks, and for a good reason. We’ve taken the time to reflect a little on our fonts. I’ve since occupied myself with font characteristics like serifs, weight, slope, width, optical size, metrics and proportions, in addition to our internal statistics for our current font offerings. Which fonts are successful, which fonts are rarely used or seldom make it onto your shirts? Which fonts are used for which season (big surprise here, HoleHearted at the beginning of February, Halloween in October), as well as which fonts are ineffective regardless of season? The results: 52% of your ideas make it on shirts with only 6 of the 25 fonts we offer. Other fonts only make it onto your products 0.01% of the time.

Long story shirt short – spring summer cleaning for our font assortment:
Starting with about 200 fonts we filtered, discussed, deleted, replaced, plotted, weeded, reordered, re-discussed and finally put together a new set of fonts. Soon you will be able to get a fitting font for your favorite quote from the best Spaghetti Westerns of the last 50 years, just like you will have the right pixel font for your personal tribute to retro gaming. That’s just the tip of the iceberg, but be patient, wait and see – it won’t be much longer before you get your hands on these gems.

laFraise Redesigned - Opens with a €15,000 T-Shirt Design Contest

You may have followed it on Twitter. Perhaps you have already seen the news on Tee-Junction or on Hide Your Arms – but you will read it here too: laFraise has launched its new redesigned site with a big bang. Our strawberry-loving colleagues at laFraise have worked hard giving the site a make-over and thought it none better than to mark the event with one of the biggest prizes in t-shirt competition history.

This special contest is the second edition of the 15K contest, but with a big new twist. Instead of awarding 3 designers with €5,000 as they did last year, there will only be one winner to lay claim to the big bag of cash filled with €15,000. Whip out your calendar and multiply that by the current exchange rate of 1.397 and you’ve got a whopping $20,955. That’s a lot of dough. In addition to the cash, this lucky talented designer will have their design printed on 2,000 shirts and go down in t-shirt history.

What Happened to Bubbles the Chimp? And other chimp t-shirts for ape fans too.

I saw this little clip on CNN last week and thought it was pretty cute.  Bubbles was Michael Jackson’s pet chimp and with all of the coverage of his funeral this was a nice change of pace and informative about the lives of chimps too.  Currently Bubbles is living at the Center for Great Apes in Florida.  You can read more about Bubbles on his extensive wikipedia page.

You can order the CNN headline t-shirt for this too “Bubbles the chimp lives the retiree life.”

Speaking of chimps, I did a quick search in the Spreadshirt marketplace and found some fun chimp designs…

Skirting the Issue - Skirts and Dresses for Summer at Spreadshirt

Its officially summer, and that means it is officailly too hot for pants! We hae got you covered - literally (and you need to be covered - especailly when you are on an airplane).  Well at lease for the ladies we have some great skirts and dresses that often got over looked by our fantastic t-shirts.

Newest in the collection is the Women’s Drape Hem Skirt - made of a super soft bamboo blend - this skirt is a little longer than our Roll Down Skirt.

Here is a not so great photo of the Drape Hem Skirt and the Roll Down Skirt - both are size small - but I wanted to show the difference in length.

Also new for the summer is the Racer Back Dress - which is from American Apparel and is made out of a fine jersey cotton - this is perfect for hot sumer days or throwing over your swim suit on the way to the beach or the pool.  Don’t forget we also have a Cover-up/Sleep Shirt too - it is a v-neck t-shirt that is longer than your average shirt so it can be worn as a dress.
