My favorite memory is every Christmas Eve we would go over to my grandparents house and have dinner. Later we would all sit around and play what I called “The Dice Game” more recently I found others play this game with re-gift items, but my family always purchased loads of “mystery gifts” and wrap them sometimes in ways you could not tell what they were. So, then we would take about 5-8 gifts and throw them in a pile. Then, a timer would be set. We would then go around in a circle and roll a set of dice, anyone who got doubles could take a prize. If all the prizes were taken before the time ran out, we were allowed to “steal” prizes until the timer stopped. Prizes would be anything from cans of nuts, lottery tickets, dollar toys, and cash. Even though we did it every year, it is one of my favorite memories because we stopped playing it a few years ago shortly before my grandfather passed away. It wasn’t about the game, it was that we had fun playing it together. It is hard to get everyone together now, and even when we do, we don’t play the game any more and hardly spend any time interacting with each other. The shirt I would want is here (Peace Love Christmas):

One of the Christmas memories that sticks in my mind is the Christmas that me and my two adoptive parents Barb and John went up to visit my biological mom Jennifer. We all stayed at Jennifer’s mom’s house. I got to see all of them and my half-brother and half-sister after not seeing them in a while. It was a great reunion with a lot of laughs. I still remember the three of us little ones running around with bows and sticking them on our father’s heads. (They were both bald). Then of course we grabbed more and placed a head full on grandpa too. That was the first Christmas I was able to be with my biological family. I don’t think I was old enough then to realize how amazing and lucky I was to be able to do that, but I do know for sure.

My favorite tradition is and will be as long as I live, to have wherever I am, wherever I stay, a christmas tree. Tiny or large, real or artificial plus some decorations it simply is a must. Just to create emphasize and uplift the feel of Christmas. That means also in a guest room in hospital or making time when there hardly any time left to do it. It will be ready just before Christmas Eve. If there is no tree then pine branches will do too and self made deco from whatever material is available!

The first Christmas my wife and I spent together, she was recently separated and had two young children. I wanted to help make Christmas special for her and the kids and, as she had her heart set on a real tree, I set out into the bush to retrieve one. It was freezing that day and I was puttering around on the ATV searching for the “perfect” tree but was having a hard time finding so much as a “decent” tree. Finally, late in the afternoon, I spotted one from across a pond. I made my way over, felled it and was dragging it back when I went through the ice. The pond was only about 4 feet deep, but by the time I was able to get the ATV back up and out and pull myself out, I was soaked, freezing and pretty discouraged. When I got home, looking like a wet shivering rat, I put the tree in the garage to thaw and proceeded to thaw myself out with a warm bath. Later that night when I brought the tree in and we started decorating, the looks on their faces made it all worthwhile. That is, until the next day when hundreds of small flies also thawed and I had no choice but to throw the tree out. Discouraged but undaunted, we all packed into the vehicle and went to the nearest store to buy a tree. We’ve had a “fake” tree ever since…but it’s never hampered the spirit of our Holiday.
